‘Mentally unstable’ woman beaten to death in Bihar over suspicion of child-lifting

Patna: An angry mob thrashed a woman to death in Vaishali district of Bihar over suspicion of her being a child-lifter. It is being alleged that the woman is mentally unstable. The mob allegedly tied the woman to a pole in Sehdai Buzurg block of Vaishali and mercilessly thrashed her until she died, the police said on Friday. 

The woman was beaten up with sticks by locals after being tied to a pole. While angry locals beat up the woman, others played mute spectators as they watched the woman being thrashed. 

The police are suspecting that the woman lost her mental balance after her child went missing or after it died. The woman was caught by the locals when she entered one of the houses in the district while looking for her own child. 

Locals alleged that they had seen the woman in the nearby areas a few days ago. At that time, the woman was seen attending to a pile of clothes as if it were a child. According to a report, the woman does not have any recollection of how she reached Vaishali.

On the night of the incident, the woman entered one of the houses. She was telling the people residing in the house that her child had gone missing. The people living in the house allegedly presumed her to be a child-lifter and started thrashing her. Within minutes, the family’s neighbours joined and the woman was tied to a pole and beaten. 

After the woman died, the locals threw her body away from the spot. The police reached the area and recovered the body. The body has been sent for a post-mortem and efforts are being made to arrest the accused. 

This is not the first instance where people have taken the law into their hands and have lynched an innocent due to suspicion. Similar incidents have surfaced where people have thrashed women and men ruthlessly as they suspected them of being child-lifters or thieves. While these incidents are on a rise, no concrete step has been taken by the government to help these people.

In July this year, another incident of mob violence came to light from Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar when a woman was beaten over suspicion of being a child-lifter. It was later alleged that the woman was mentally disturbed. The incident took place in the Cantonment area of Sagar. 

On being interrogated, the woman said that she was from Ratlam and that she did not know how she had reached Sagar. The police registered a case of assault in relation to the incident but none of the accused was arrested.

Worry within RJD as Tejashwi Yadav stays away from action

The meeting of RJD’s legislature party was cancelled on Saturday, reportedly because Leader of Opposition in Assembly Tejashwi Yadav was not going to attend it. This comes a day after former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi said on Friday that Tejashwi would attend the meeting on Saturday. On Friday, 66 of the party’s 81 MLAs attended the meeting.

Tejashwi has been mostly missing from the political scene after the Lok Sabha results in which the RJD drew a blank. He attended the just-concluded Assembly proceedings only for a couple of days, but did not take part in any debate. He also skipped the recent function of the RJD regarding its campaign to get new members.

He has, however, been active on Twitter. He recently criticised the state government for the deaths of children in Muzaffarpur and Vaishali because of the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome and over its handling of the flood situation.

A section of RJD leaders are concerned with Tejashwi’s “growing disinterest” in state politics. An RJD source said, “He wants to be in full control of the party but he is not being allowed to do so. He has been upset at his elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav’s intermittent acts of defiance. He is also unhappy with some senior leaders blaming him solely for the party’s defeat. He wants his family to set things in order before he takes over reins of the party with full interest.”

Tej Pratap, who has floated apolitical forum Lalu Rabri Morcha, has been constantly throwing a challenge to Tejashwi’s leadership. “Though Tej Pratap might not have much support beyond the youth wing leaders of the party, his actions can embarass the party,” said a senior RJD leader.

An RJD leader said the rout in the Lok Sabha polls has dampened the morale of the party. “Tejashwi is not being able to take senior leaders along and to inspire confidence in the workers at the grassroots. His current silence is harmful for the alliance too. Congress is already talking about going alone in the Assembly polls,” said the leader.

While Rabri Devi allayed apprehensions of any split in the party during the meeting on Friday, senior RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh spoke about how the alliance with RLSP, Vikasshil Insaan Party and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) did not benefit the RJD.

Party spokesperson Mrityunjay Tewari said, “The party meeting on Saturday had to be cancelled because of unavoidable reasons. Not much should be read into it.”

Two wanted Maoists surrendered before Bihar police with huge cache of arms

PATNA: After years of chasing, the outlawed CPI (Maoist) guerrillas, two hardcore Maoists of Vaishali district in Bihar surrendered at police headquarters on Monday with a huge cache of arms and ammunition.

The Maoists, identified as Amarnath Sahni (45) and Rakesh Sahni (40) of Jandaha block were wanted in more than a dozen cases of insurgency-related crimes including the murder of two farmers in 2018.

ADG (Hq) Jitendra Kumar told the media that Amarnath Sahni has been accused of 14 cases whereas his associate Rakesh Kumar is named in six Maoist related crimes in the state.

“They surrendered before the police headquarters with one carbine machine gun, 2 pistols and a large number of cartridges and one country made one round pistol,” Kumar added.

Mobile firm told to pay Rs 6,000 as compensation

District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum president GK Dhir and its member Jyotsna Thathai has ordered a mobile company to repair the defective mobile of aggrieved consumer within 30 days without any charges.

The forum has also ordered Coolpad Communications Private Limited, New Mumbai, Maharashtra, and its authorised service centre Cell Tech India, Surya Arcade Complex, National Road, Bhai Chowk, Ludhiana, to pay Rs3,000 for mental pain, agony, harassment and Rs3,000 for litigation expenses to the aggrieved consumer.

The orders came on a complaint moved by Akshansh Chopra, Phase-1, Dugri, Ludhiana. The complainant submitted before the forum that he purchased a mobile Coolpad Note 3 Plus (Gold) in September 2016 for Rs8,999. There was a technical fault in the set, after which the father of complainant along with his friend Vijay Goyal, visited the registered service centre on March 23, 2017.

The complainant’s father gave the copy of the bill to Vaishali, the attendant on the desk. Thereafter, Vaishali disclosed that some charges have to be paid for the mobile and when the complainant’s father asked for the estimate, she demanded Rs50 for the preparation of the estimate itself.

It was alleged that the demand was illegal, being against the terms and conditions of the warranty. It was claimed that the mobile set became non-functional and the same was handed over to Hari Om Telecom for repair, who gave the report regarding the mobile set being dead on March 25, 2017.

The mobile company or its authroised centre did not help them. So, a legal notice was served, but in vain. After appreciating the evidence on record, the forum found that there was no expert opinion on record that the mobile phone was not repairable. So, it would be in the fitness to pass the order for the repair of the mobile.

No one appeared before the forum from the Mobile company or the authorised centre and they were proceeded ex-parte.

Labourer dies as building collapses in Masjid Bunder

Mumbai: A labourer died when the a building in Masjid Bunder area collapsed on Friday. The labourers were demolishing the dilapidated Sayyad building as it was extremely damaged due to the fire that broke out on August 3. The incident took place at 5pm.

Five labourers appointed by the contractor were trapped under the debris. Reportedly, three of them are safe while two suffered head injuries. The two injured were taken to the state-run JJ Hospital, where one labourer Farid Khan (45) was declared brought dead while; Abdul Shaikh (24) was receiving treatment at the hospital.

As per the disaster management report, “The building was owned by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) and the Mumbai Fire Brigade had directed the state body to pull down the mostly woo-den structure. The Mhada had appointed a private contractor to demolish the building. However, during the demolition the entire building came crashing down.”  

Mhada spokesperson Vaishali Gadpale said, “Mhada had appointed a contractor and the demolition work was in process when the building came crashing down. To know the reason behind the tragedy, we will definitely investigate the matter.”

Chief fire officer P.S. Rahangdale said, “Mhada was directed to demolish the building after the August 3 fire.”

On August 3, a major fire had engulfed the ground floor of the building but was confined mainly to electrical fittings and appliances. While several people were rescued, firemen battled the blaze for nearly two days before it was extinguished.

The fire brigade control room received a call at 4.24 am on August 3 and the fire was extinguished at 8.55 am on August 5. The fire brigade personnel safely rescued a man and three woman stranded at the upper floors of the ground plus four-storey commercial cum residential building

The building had large quantity of combustible material such as leather purses, plastic sheets etc.

Tej Pratap Yadav is a drug addict, dresses up like Radha and Krishna, alleges wife Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai, wife of Tej Pratap Yadav, former Bihar Health Minister and elder son of Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad, has alleged that her husband was a drug addict and often dressed up like Radha, Krishna and Shiva while claiming to be their avatar.

Mr. Tej Pratap, an RJD MLA from Mahua in Vaishali district, has filed a divorce case against Ms. Rai in a local court in Patna. Both were married in May 2018 in a grand ceremony. However, five months after the marriage, Mr. Tej Pratap filed a divorce petition. Ms. Rai’s father Chandrika Rai is an RJD MLA and her grandfather Daroga Prasad Rai was also Chief Minister of the State.

In her voluminous application under Section 26, seeking protection from the family court under the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Ms. Rai has claimed that immediately after her marriage, she learnt that Mr. Tej Pratap was a drug addict who used to consume ganja (marijuana) and under its influence would claim to be an avatar of Lord Shiva.

“Tej Pratap used to dress up like Lord Radha, Krishna and Shiva…I got to know about this soon after my wedding that he used to dress up like gods and goddesses….once after consuming drugs, Tej Pratap wore a gaghra (long skirt) and choli (blouse) and dressed up like goddess Radha, he also wore makeup and a hair wig,” Ms. Rai has alleged.

Though she tried her best to bring this issue to her in-laws’ notice, they did not help her in any manner. “I did talk to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law regarding Tej Pratap’s behaviour and they assured that he would not behave in such manner any more….my in-laws consoled me emotionally but Tej Pratap’s behavior did not change at all,” she alleged.

“Ganja to Bhole babe ka prasad hai, usko kaise mana karen? (Marijuana is Lord Shiva’s oblation; how can I say no to that?)”, Tej Pratap used to say whenever I asked him to stop taking drugs. “Krishna hi Radha hai, Radha hi Krishna hai’ (Krishna is Radha and Radha is Krishna),” he also used to say, alleged Ms. Rai in a series of pointers in her application.

She also has stated that her husband used to talk poorly of her educational background. “Your English education has no meaning as you’re destined to cook food and create a family,” Ms. Tej Pratap used to say her, claimed Ms. Rai.

Ms. Rai currently resides at her in laws’ place at 10 Circular Road residence of former Chief Minister and her mother-in-law Rabri Devi. “I’m nowhere secure than living here,” she said in her application.

Her father contested the last Lok Sabha election on RJD ticket from Saran parliamentary constituency but lost against BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy. “It is after the Lok Sabha poll result the behaviour of family members of Tej Pratap too changed towards me,” Ms. Rai alleged.

RJD sources told The Hindu that there was a “bitter wrangling” going on in the family these days.

Now, expect fewer call drops on Delhi Metro’s Pink and Magenta lines

Commuters on Delhi Metro’s Pink Line (connecting Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar) or Magenta Line (connecting Botanical Garden and Janakpuri West) are expected to get relief from call drops, poor network and snapped internet inside trains and in stations.

Months after the two lines were thrown open for public, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has installed network boosters throughout the underground route of the Pink and the Magenta lines to ensure “uninterrupted” mobile phone services.

“We conducted successful trials throughout July and now even in the underground section of both the lines, mobile connectivity is available. We are installing mobile towers in the older lines so that the problem of call drops is solved,” said a senior DMRC official.

The 58-km Pink Line has 38 stations, of which 11 are underground, while the Magenta Line, which stretches across 38 kilometres between Noida and West Delhi, has 23 of its total 25 stations underground. Compared to the older corridors, the problem of poor mobile connectivity is particularly high on these two routes.

Officials said in the coming days, connectivity will get better.

“Services of major mobile service providers, which cater to a majority of consumers, are now available on the corridors. Work is also in progress to provide connectivity for all remaining service providers,” a DMRC spokesperson said.

In May this year, the DMRC had said that they are installing nearly 94 additional mobile towers across its network. The Metro said that the maximum number of these towers—in nearly 35 locations—will be installed on the Blue Line (Dwarka sector-21 to Vaishali and Noida Electronic City), especially between Noida Electronic City and Shadipur and Laxmi Nagar and Vaishali.

Towers will also be installed in about 18 locations on the Yellow Line (between Samaypur Badli and Huda City Centre), and 14 locations on the Violet Line (between Kashmere Gate and Ballabhgarh).

Accidents, Intimidation And A Lot More. Even In 2019, Getting Justice For A Rape Survivor Remains A Huge Challenge

On Sunday, July 29th a woman set herself on fire outside the Vaishali Nagar police station in Jaipur after the cops allegedly failed to act on a rape complaint she had filed over a month ago.

The woman, who is married and had a son had alleged that a relative had raped her and blackmailed for years while her husband, an army man was away for duty.

On Sunday, she reportedly went to the Police Station to meet the SHO and after it failed she took out petrol from her two-wheeler and set herself on fire. The woman who was seriously injured was rushed to a hospital where she died a day later. 

Her husband had alleged that the cops did not act on the complaint as they had taken a huge amount from the accused to hush up the case.

Last week, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had tweeted a video which was shot inside a police station in Kanpur.

In the video, the cops are seen harassing a 16-year-old girl after she went to the police station to file a complaint of molestation.

The cops instead of filing the FIR went on a victim-shaming spree and the head constable was even seen “interrogating” the teen.

He goes on to question why she was wearing jewellery like a ring and a necklace.

You don’t study. So much jewellery, why are you wearing it? What’s the use of these? This just shows what you really are,” the cop is heard saying in the video.

He then went on to give a lecture to the parents about the girl’s character.

A 17-year-old girl from Unnao, UP had filed a rape case against the local MLA Kuldeep Sengar in June 2017. But for nearly ten months nothing happened and in April 2018 the girl attempted to set herself on fire outside the residence of CM Yogi Adityanath to demand justice.  

These are three recent cases that have been once again highlighted the plight a rape or molestation victim has to go through to get justice.

These are not isolated cases, over the years there have been innumerable cases from across India where the rape survivor had to take the extreme step because the police failed to act on her complaint. 

Due to the stigma attached to being identified as a rape victim, the majority of rape incidents do not get reported and the victims will live a life of silent suffering. It takes a certain amount of courage and trust in the system for a rape survivor to come out and file a complaint. But once those who are supposed to give justice to her fails to do so, it is not just them failing, it is the system that failed the rape victim. She will then be forced to take desperate steps like a hunger strike, public protest or even suicide.

Jaipur: The rape victim who attempted suicide at Vaishali Nagar police station by setting herself afire over alleged police inaction succumbed to burn injuries early on Monday. The woman who accused policemen of not taking action against the manwho raped her even a month after she lodged an FIR was undergoing treatment at SMS Hospital with over 75% burn marks. The family members demanded action against police officials after the woman’s death.

The woman, a resident of Kachan Vihar area in Jaipur, had registered an FIR one Ravindra Singh, belonging to Fatehpur Shekhawati about a month ago. The woman in the FIR stated that her husband was posted in army. Ravindra had come to her house with her husband nearly four years ago. Her husband went to Jammu and Kashmir on duty, but Ravindra kept visiting her house in his absence. Ravindra took her to the house of his friend one day on some pretext and made her have cold drink laced with drugs. He then raped her.

The woman visited the Vaishali Nagar police station almost daily after registering the FIR demanding action against the accused, but she alleged that the police officials were supporting the accused, not her. They accused her of registering a bogus complaint and pressurized her to withdraw the case. They even allegedly misbehaved with her.

The woman came to Vaishali Nagar police station along with her 13-year-old son. She set herself afire on the police station premises. The son started crying for help. A constable, Amar Singh, sustained serious burns while trying to rescue the woman.

She was rushed to the burn ward of SMS Hospital where doctors declared him around 5 am on Monday.

Max Hospital, Vaishali raises awareness on rising incidences of kidney diseases amongst youth

The doctors also highlighted the recent advancements in the field of renal transplant which has made the overall procedure of a kidney transplant a low-risk surgical process. While the patients spoke about their experience with the disease, the doctors shared knowledge on various precautionary steps and latest available treatments for better management of renal health by adolescents.
The session conducted by the Nephrology team deliberated various factors due to which a lot of young adults are being diagnosed with various stages of kidney diseases. Some of the most common factors which stood out were excess consumption of processed food, lack of exercise, obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Overuse of over the counter drugs like antibiotics, painkillers and steroids in early life also severely impact their kidneys.
19 year old Vivek Yadav from Gorakhpur was diagnosed with high BP and kidney failure two years ago. He was on hemodialysis since then and none of his family members had a similar blood group. He was brought to the emergency department, Max Hospital Vaishali, with the complaints of severe breathlessness and high blood pressure. Detailed investigation revealed excess water accumulation in his lungs that had caused breathlessness and was monitored on ventilator for 3 days. Upon improvement in his condition, he was tapered off the ventilator and was put on hemodialysis routine, thrice a week.
Talking further about the case, Dr Neeru P Aggarwal, highlighted, ‘While, Vivek’s blood group was O positive his mother’s was A positive. However, after complete evaluation, it was found that ABO incompatible transplant was a possibility in his case. The 5-hour surgery was successfully performed and there were no post-operative complications and his body adapted his mother’s kidney very well. After a span of 10 days or so, his kidney function improved significantly. Few of the precautions he was asked to take included using a mask when stepping out, maintaining personal hygiene and avoiding crowded places.’
Vivek has resumed higher studies and doing well in follow ups and is very disciplined with his lifestyle as well as transplant medication.

Sanjay Sinha a 35-year-old gentleman was found to have advanced kidney failure in 2009 when he was 25 years old. He underwent kidney transplantation in 2009 when his mother donated a kidney to him. However, the transplanted kidney lasted for approximately 10 years and the graft failed in Jan 2019.
Speaking about his case, Dr Manoj K Singhal, said, ‘After evaluating Sanjay’s case, we advised him to restart his dialysis treatment.Fortunately, this time his elder sister stepped in and offered to donate a kidney to him. Since, it was his second kidney transplant; there was a high risk of his body rejecting the donor’s kidney post operation. Therefore, he was thoroughly investigated and was found to have DSAs (Donor Specific antibodies)which increases the risk of rejection of the new kidney. While this posed as a challenge for us, we desensitized him with plasma-exchange before the transplantation and the surgery went successfully.’
Sanjay has gone back to his normal life and doing well since last 2 months post his transplant.
