Mumbai: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has made a breakthrough in the 13/7 Mumbai triple blasts — in which 27 people were killed and 127 others injured, with the arrest of two suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives — both hailing from the northern state of Bihar.
Announcing the breakthrough in the July 13, 2011 blasts, State ATS chief Rakesh Maria said yesterday that IM kingpin Ahmad Zarar Siddibapa alias Imran alias Yasin Bhatkal was the mastermind behind the bombings in Mumbai's financial hubs of the Opera House business district, the Zaveri Bazaar and the Dadar district.
In addition to Yasin Bhaktal, the police are looking for two more accused of planting bombs at two of the sites.
Identifying the two arrested IM operatives as Naqi Ahmad Wasi Ahmad Shaikh (22) and Nadeem Akhtar Ashfaq Shaikh (23), Maria said that both were from Deora Bandoli village from the Dharbhanga district from Bihar. While Naqi came to Mumbai and was staying in Madenpura sometime in September/October 2010, Nadeem was already staying at Antop Hill in north-central Mumbai.
Apart from the two arrests, the ATS is seeking the transfer of one more accused — identified as Haroon Rashid Naik —— whom its officers arrested on August 22, 2011, in connection with a counterfeit currency seizure case.
Prime suspect
A key suspect in the 13/7 blasts case, Yasin Bhatkal is one of the key functionaries of the Indian Mujahideen (IM). He is suspected of selecting Pune's German Bakery site and to have executed the blast on February 13, 2010. Seventeen people were killed and 54 injured.
A distant relative of Bhatkal brothers Riyaz and Iqbal, the founders of IM, he is from the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. The Bhatkal brothers have links to Lashkar-e-Taiba. IM came into the spotlight in 2008 when the Mumbai Crime Branch, then headed by Maria, arrested a 21-member terror module on charges of involvement in bomb blasts across the country.
