Bihar teacher impresses Anand Mahindra, Shah Rukh Khan with her multiplication table learning technique.

Source – timesnownews.com

Patna: A video of a Bihar school teacher teaching the multiplication table to her students has caught the attention of industrialist Anand Mahindra and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan.

Mahindra who frequently shares videos that he receives on his “WhatsApp wonder box” recently shared a video of a Bihar teacher informing her students about a clever hack to learn the multiplication table of number nine. “Whaaaat? I didn’t know about this clever shortcut. Wish she had been MY math teacher. I probably would have been a lot better at the subject! #whatsappwonderbox,” Mahindra wrote on Twitter.

The video shows the teacher demonstrating how students can learn the multiplication table of nine with the help of their hands.

The teacher in the video is Ruby Kumari who teaches at a school in Bounsi, Banka. The video was initially shared by Ruby on ‘Teachers of Bihar- the changemakers’, a Facebook group of the Bihar education project council.

The video has gone viral across social media platforms. It has been viewed more than 4.67 lakh times on Twitter alone. The video also prompted netizens to share their hacks.

“Can’t tell you how many of my life’s issues this one simple calculation has solved, wow!” Shah Rukh Khan wrote on Twitter.

Soon after the video went viral, Ruby thanked Mahindra and Shah Rukh for sharing the video. She said, “I thank superstar Shahrukh Khan and Anand Mahindraji for liking my video and sharing it. I am very happy that my innovation is being watched by people across India. I am thankful to the ‘Teachers of Bihar-the Changemakers’ for giving me the opportunity by sharing my video on their platform.”

She added that she would like all government school teachers to make learning fun through innovation and activity-based approach without the burden of heavy school bags.

Pawan Varma can go to any party he wants, says Nitish.

Source – thehindu.com

Two days after party leader Pawan Varma sent him a stinging two-page letter asking for his “ideological clarity on the electoral tie-up with the BJP for the coming Delhi elections”, JD(U) president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday broke his silence to say, “if he [Mr Varma] wants to go to some other party, he has my wishes”.

Mr Varma later said he would continue to speak what he “believes good of the country and for the party”.

On December 21, Mr. Varma, said in his letter that he was “deeply perplexed” over the development of ties with the BJP beyond Bihar. He ‘reminded’ Mr. Kumar of his confession to him, on more than one occasion, about his “grave apprehensions” of the BJP-RSS combine. He also mentioned about the “private conversations” he had had with Mr. Kumar on ties with the BJP.

“He [Mr Varma] is a learned man for whom I’ve a lot of respect, even if he may not have the same for me. But this is not the way to share such things in public… it is surprising…he says I’ve told him certain things in private…what if I should tell you what he had told me?”, Mr Kumar told journalists. “if he wants to go to some other party which is his decision… he has my wishes”, Mr Kumar said while coming out of a function organised at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on the occasion of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary.

However, an hour later, Mr Varma responded to Mr. Kumar’s statement and told journalists that he would decide his next course of action after getting response to his letter from Mr. Kumar. “Awaiting reply of my letter to Nitish Kumar… will decide future course of action after that but I’ll continue to speak what I believe is right, what is good for the country and the party”, he said in Delhi.

Though he was in Patna on Wednesday to participate in a function, Mr. Varma chose not to meet Mr. Kumar.

Mr. Kumar said, “If he has any confusion he should have put it before me or at the party forum but there should not be any confusion in anyone’s mind about how the JD(U) as a party runs”.

Mr. Varma said in his letter, “In my first meeting with you in Patna in August 2012 you had spoken to me at length and with conviction on why Narendra Modi and his policies are inimical for the country… when you were leading the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ you had openly made a call for RSS Mukt Bharat. I remember your confession to me in private how the current leadership in BJP party has humiliated you. You maintained on more than one occasion, that the BJP is leading India into a ‘dangerous space’.

Action likely

A JD(U) source told The Hindu that Mr. Kumar may take action against Mr. Varma and Prashant Kishor, who have of late been hammering him with tweets and letters, on January 27, when he would meet party leaders at his official residence, 1 Anne Marg.

State JD(U) chief Basistha Narayan Singh had said he would urge Mr. Kumar to take action against these party leaders.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren orders SIT probe after Pathalgarhi supporters kill 7 villagers.

Source – indiatoday.in

upporters of “Pathalgarhi” movement, armed with lathis and axes, kidnapped seven villagers and later killed them in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand for allegedly opposing their stir, police said on Wednesday.

With the horrific incident in Burugulikera village, over 175 km from capital Ranchi, triggering widespread outrage, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren ordered setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to find reasons behind the massacre of seven innocent villagers.

Hemant Soren also directed the officials to help families of the victims.

“Set up a special investigation team (SIT) to get a breakthrough about the real reasons behind the incident and identify the guilty. Help families of the victims,” an official release said quoting Soren.

The tragedy coming barely days after the JMM-Congress- RJD coalition government assumed power in the state drew sharp reaction from the BJP.

Newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president J P Nadda condemned the mass killing and set up a six-member party team to visit the place and submit a report within a week, a press statement issued by the saffron party’s national General Secretary Arun Singh said.

The members of the team are — Jaswant Singh Bhabhor (MP from Gujarat), Samir Oraon (MP from Jharkhand), Bharati Pawar (Parliamentarian from Maharashtra), Gomti Saai (Chhattisgarh Lok Sabha member), Joan Barla (LS member from West Bengal) and former Jharkhand minister and MLA Nilkanth Singh Munda — the release said.

Giving detail of the event, Inspector General of Police (Operation) Saket Kumar Singh said that the policemen reached Burugulikera village on Tuesday night after getting information about the killing of seven natives.

After murdering, the killers had dumped bodies of the victims in a nearby forest.

A panchayat representative was among those massacred, Saket Kumar Singh said.

After an overnight search operation, bodies of the seven villagers were recovered from the forest, four km from the village, Saket Kumar Singh said.

There was a meeting over ‘Pathalgarhi’ movement in the village on Tuesday when a dispute had arisen, West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Indrajit Mahata said.

Following the development, supporters of the movement kidnapped seven villagers and later killed them with the help of lathis and axes, Saket Kumar Singh said.

Pathalgarhi is a name given to a tribal protest which seeks autonomy for village sabhas (Gramsabhas). Those demanding Pathalgarhi want no laws of the land be applicable on the tribal people in the area.

The Pathalgarhis reject government rights over their forests and rivers.

As part of the movement, Pathalgarhis erect a stone plaque or signboard outside the village/area, declaring the village as sovereign territory and prohibiting the entry of the outsiders.

Hemant Soren had earlier in the day said: “Law is above all and the guilty will not be spared. The police is investigating the matter.”

A high-level meeting will be convened to prevent recurrence of such an incident, Hemant Soren said.

Pathalgarhi movement had hit the national headlines in the middle of 2019.

On June 19, five NGO workers were allegedly abducted and gangraped by armed men associated with the Pathalgarhi movement. They were performing a street play at a school in Khunti district of Jharkhand when they were targetted.

The raiders had branded the NGO workers as “dikus” (outsiders).

On June 26, another group of armed Pathalgarhis had abducted three security personnel posted at the former BJP MP Karia Munda’s home in Khunti. They were released later.

The Pathalgarhi groups have been active across four districts of Jharkhand – Khunti, Gumla, Simdega and West Singhbhum.

All of them are Maoist-infested districts. Soon after being sworn in as the chief minister on December 29 last, Hemant Soren had announced his decision to withdraw all sedition cases registered during the Pathalgarhi movement and protests against the amendments to Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNT Act) and Santhal Paragana Tenancy Act (SPT Act).

Former Chief Minister Raghubar Das condemned the Burugulikera massacre and demanded immediate arrest of the killers.

“I feel very painful at the barbaric killing of seven innocent villagers at Burugulikera in West Singhbhum district,” Raghubar Das said in a statement.

Raghubar Das said that the incident raises “a question mark on the law and order situation in the state”.

BJPs Scheduled Tribe Morcha national vice president Arun Oraon also strongly criticised the killing.

“The BJP will send a partys central team to visit the spot to collect pieces of evidence and look into them,” he told reporters here during the day.

The Morchas national secretary and MLA, Koche Munda, alleged that the incident reflected the poor law and order situation in the state, “boosting the morale of anti-social elements”.

Curfew after attack on pro-CAA procession.

Source – telegraphindia.com

A procession of 4,000 people, including women, out in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was attacked in Lohardaga on Thursday, prompting the police to clamp an indefinite curfew in the town.

Over 50 persons, including policemen, were injured in the attack on the procession organised by local Hindutva outfit Jai Sriram Samiti with permission from the administration.

The procession, starting from the Lalit Narayan stadium, was supposed to end at Kutchery Chowk. But around 12.15pm, when it reached Somar Bazaar, a predominantly minority settlement, people, many from rooftops, started pelting stones on the procession. Eyewitnesses said at least 20 vehicles and a couple of houses and shops were also torched.

“They set my jewellery shop on fire and attacked my house. In front of my eyes, they set as many as four bikes on fire,” said Manoj Soni, owner of Shobha Jewellers.

Attackers then fanned out to Lohardaga Sadar Hospital and Amla Toli Chowk areas. They pelted stones at Lohardaga Sadar Hospital. Stray bullets were also fired.

“Patients were screaming in fear,” a hospital employee said. “Somehow we managed to lock the main gate.”

People, including women, ran for shelter and frantically called up the police.

Lohardaga superintendent of police Priyadarshi Alok and deputy commissioner Akanksha Ranjan hit the streets to control the situation. Additional forces arrived from Simdega.

Police also fired teargas shells and bullets in the air to disperse the crowd.

Later in the afternoon, the district administration imposed indefinite curfew.

South Chotanagpur range deputy inspector-general of police A.V. Homkar said everything was being done to prevent the flare-up from snowballing. “Attackers had resorted to arson. Firefighting vehicles have been pressed to douse the fires. We are carrying out heavy patrolling,” he said.

Unconfirmed sources said that the mob even snatched the gun of a cop.

A bodyguard of the Lohardaga SP was heard saying that stones pelted from near the site of worship left him injured.

An employee of sadar hospital said not only was there heavy stone pelting, gunshots were also fired at the hospital. “Patients were screaming in fear,” he said. “Somehow we managed to lock the main gate of the hospital.”

Lohardaga civil surgeon Dr Vijay Kumar said patients and employees were safe. “As many as 25 injured persons were treated here (sadar hospital) and discharged. One seriously injured person has been referred to RIMS in Ranchi,” he said.

Bihar: A govt school that runs for one student.

Source – hindustantimes.com

Patna: The low student-teacher ratio has been a problem across the country. But in a village in Bihar’s Gaya there is a government school that has two teachers for one student. There is also a cook who prepares mid-day meals for the lone student.

Officials said it costs the government over Rs 59,000 monthly for the education of the lone student of class one, who studies in a one-storey school building with four classrooms and a kitchen. The government pays about Rs 58,000 to the two teachers and Rs 1,500 to the cook monthly.

Dharmaraj Paswan, the village head, said the people in the area where the school is located are more inclined towards sending their children for quality education to private schools. “…there are many options for private schools for the people. So they do not send their kids to the Mansabigha primary school,” he said.

The lone student, Jhanvi Kumari, said she gets all the attention from the two teachers and the cook, Gyanti Devi.

“Sometimes food for her is even brought from a nearby hotel, as preparing it for a student sometimes becomes a difficult task,” said one of the teachers, Priyanka Kumari.

She added that altogether nine students were enrolled in the school, but just one attends the classes. “She will also leave the school after some time,” she said. When asked about the syllabus and how her exams are conducted, Priyanka Kumari said, “We teach her to our best ability.”

“We will soon launch a drive to sensitize parents to send their kids to the school, which may increase the enrolment,” said district education officer Mustafa Hussain Mansuri

Khizarsarai block development officer Uday Kumar expressed surprise over the condition of the school. “I will inquire why the enrolment in the school is low,” he said.

Anti-CAA protests spread to 11 Bihar districts.

Source –

The ongoing protest at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, National Register of Citizens and National Population Register has spread to at least 11 districts of Bihar.

Protesters, mostly women and girls, can be seen waving national flag, singing patriotic songs and reciting poems at dharnas in parks and open areas. In Patna alone, such protests are being held at three places for the past several days.

‘No party flags’

Politicians and social activists like Brinda Karat, Kanhaiya Kumar, Yogendra Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav and Shivanand Tiwari have addressed the protesters, explaining the implications of the CAA. “We don’t allow them to make political speeches here. They come to lend us support, nothing more,” said Omair Khan, who has been leading one such protest at Gaya’s Shanti Bagh.

“Leaders are welcome to lend us support, but no party flags are allowed,” said Mohd. Sarfaraj, who has been sitting on protest at Patna’s Subzibagh.

Phulwarisharif and Mangal Talab are the other two areas in Patna which have been seeing continuous anti-CAA-NRC-NPR protests. Hundreds of women of all ages and even small children can be seen sitting round-the-clock and raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government’s “anti-people” policies. Mothers holding babies in their arms discuss how CAA-NPR-NRC would impact their lives, while the men are mostly engaged in managing the crowd.

“We will not move from here till this law is withdrawn by the Modi government even if it takes months or years,” says a veiled Akbari Khatun, who has been coming to the protest site every day for the last 17 days.

Students at forefront

Similar protests are being held in Kishanganj, Katihar, Bettiah in West Champaran, Begusarai, Nalanda, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Gaya, Darbhanga and Madhubani districts. At some places like Bettiah, girl students from Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Milia Islamia have been leading the protests. “The CAA, NRC and NPR have put a question mark on our identity in our own country. Who are these people to ask us for our identity,” asked a young girl from Darbhanga.

“The day is not far when such protests will spread to all corners of the country and force the government to withdraw this law,” said Nafisa Parveen at Gaya.
